This October and November, families, history buffs, and veterans alike are invited to experience a once-in-a-lifetime event that celebrates two of America’s most iconic military branches. And there’s no better place to do it than right here in Philadelphia, the official birthplace of both the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps.

Wait, Philly Is the Birthplace of the Navy and the Marine Corps?

That’s right! The United States Navy was founded on October 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and authorized the purchase of two ships. Not long after, on November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the recruiting of two battalions of Marines, which soon happened at The Tun, an actual tavern, right along the Delaware River. So it’s only fitting that the official Navy & Marine Corps 250th Celebration is taking place right where it all began.

What’s Happening and Why You Can’t Miss It

From October 9 to 16 and again from November 7 to 11, Philadelphia and the surrounding region will come alive with various can't-miss, free events, including parades, concerts, fireworks, ship tours, and more.
